“95% of dieters end up regaining the weight they lost within two years. Calorie-restricting diets are often successful at helping people lose weight, but they’re very unsuccessful at helping people maintain that weight loss.”

Jen Carter, PhD
Counseling and Sport Psychologist, Associate Professor

Let’s face it.

While diet and exercise are undeniably essential components of a healthy lifestyle, they don't always work on their own. They often fall short in addressing the myriad health issues that contribute to weight gain, issues like excess skin, and a host of other underlying factors that can make the journey towards sustainable weight loss a complex and impossible challenge.

Bariatric surgery is the #1 treatment option for those suffering from severe obesity (National Institute of Health).

Metabolic and bariatric surgery includes several different procedures to promote weight loss. Surgery works by restricting the size of the stomach and/or causing malabsorption of the foods eaten, depending on which procedure is done.

What is Bariatric Surgery?

Bariatric surgery, also called weight loss surgery, focuses on procedures that promote weight loss for those who have not had success with other diets or exercise. Research supports bariatric surgery as the #1 treatment option with long-term success for those with obesity. Bariatric surgery also helps improve other chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and arthritis.

Pivot Weight Loss surgeons are specialized in performing these types of procedures. Our team of specialists work together to support patients through surgery and beyond.

Types of Bariatric Surgery

There are several procedures that can be done, depending on health status, health history, and overall goals. The most common surgeries include sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, single-anastomosis duodenal switch, and gastric band.

Sleeve Gastrectomy.

The sleeve gastrectomy has become the most common bariatric surgery in recent years, accounting for about 60% of all surgeries in 2019. The sleeve is considered a restrictive surgery - meaning it promotes weight loss by restricting food intake.

During surgery, your surgeon will remove 80-90% of the stomach using a surgical stapler, leaving a stomach about the size of a peeled banana. By removing most of the stomach, hunger hormone production is also reduced, resulting in decreased appetite.

Gastric Bypass.

The gastric bypass is the “gold-standard” bariatric surgery. It was first performed in the late 1960’s and results in significant and successful weight loss. The bypass is a restrictive and malabsorptive surgery - meaning it promotes weight loss by restricting food intake and changing the way the body absorbs and digests food.

With gastric bypass, a small pouch is created from the top corner of the stomach. The surgeon then separates the small intestine into two parts, and connects the lower part to the new pouch. The new pouch only holds 2-3 ounces at a time, resulting in significantly less food intake. Because the top portion of small intestines is no longer connected directly to the stomach, an estimated 10-25% of the foods and nutrients you eat will not be fully absorbed or digested.

Single-Anastomosis Duodenal Switch.

The duodenal switch combines the sleeve and gastric bypass. This procedure is often completed in two steps: first having a sleeve gastrectomy, then completing the intestinal re-routing during a separate procedure at least 6 months later.

Gastric Banding.

The gastric band is an inflatable device placed around the top portion of the stomach, mimicking the effects of a small pouch and creating a “funnel effect” to help you feel full faster.

While gastric banding does not cause permanent changes to your GI tract and is fully reversible, if needed, weight loss results tend to happen at a much slower rate than other procedure options.
